Healing Our Inner & Outer World with Whole Foods

Our inner world is a reflection of our outer world in many ways. Each of our bodies is a microcosm of events so profoundly powerful that one simple imbalance of internal power can throw our entire processing system into turmoil. Yet we view ourselves without power to create changes within that can balance us in ways that will allow us to come from a place of clarity, purpose and love.

One of the oldest and truest forms of healing comes from what grows on our planet. Pure, natural, unprocessed, organic foods are the almost forgotten and yet the most potent key to true health: mentally, physically and spiritually. I’d like to take you on an internal journey to help remove any barriers you have created that will allow you to have access to your perfect health.

It is all too common these days for people to complain of mental fogginess, lack of energy, digestive unrest, chronic illness and aches/pains. It may just be that you are dealing with an overgrowth of unhealthy bacteria in your body called candida. If you have ever been on birth control for more than two years, antibiotics more than a month or within 4 times in one year, had persistent issues with your reproductive organs, or simply been in prolonged stressful situations, it’s possible you too have candida. Candida thrives on the body’s by-products: dead tissue and sugars from foods.

It’s normal for everyone to have some candida, but when it gets out of control it has been linked to ADHD, autism, food allergies, AIDS, and even cancer. The test for this is free and easy. Now, on to the good news! You can bring balance back into your inner world by using the healing power of some of our whole, alkaline foods!

The most common question I’m asked is, “What is a whole food?” When you go to the market, ask yourself if what you’re holding in your hand is something that you could have picked directly from a plant. If so, then it’s a whole food. Whole foods contain enzymes, antioxidants, essential proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and fibers that help protect against chronic diseases.  Feeding your body these real foods helps your body re-set itself to a state where it can heal itself as it is designed to do.

It seems so logical doesn’t it? We were placed on a planet filled with everything we need to thrive, yet the convenience factor has been outweighing what is necessary for us to be whole and healed. One of the keys to regaining balance is to reduce your inner, acidic environment, that candida loves, by using some of these whole, alkaline foods as medicine, as well as the power of positive thinking.

There are many websites that offer advice on alkaline foods but few that have a list that targets inhibiting candida growth and cultivating its demise. One of the books I feel is on-target for this plan is The Body Ecology Diet by Donna Gates. The following is her list of foods she suggests avoiding. The entire candida cleansing protocol is a little complex but take the first steps by avoiding the following.

Avoid acid-forming foods:

  • Flour products
  • Beans, tofu, soybean products
  • Wine, beer, and alcohol
  • Nuts and nut butters
  • Sugar, candy, and soft drinks
  • Saccharin, NutraSweet, and Equal
  • Commercial refined vinegar

Avoid only these alkaline forming foods:

  • Fruits (except lemons, limes, unsweetened cranberries, and black currants)

While you’re starving the candida, you’ll also want to increase the good bacteria in your digestive system. Introduce lots of cultured vegetables and coconut water kefir, both of which are loaded with probiotics, into your daily diet. Here’s a simple and effective recipe for coconut kefir, also from The Body Ecology Diet, that is superior to yogurt and will start to rebuild your good intestinal bacteria:

Coconut Kefir (Kefir means “feel good” in Turkish!)

  • Buy 4-6 young, green coconuts from Thailand (typically found in health food stores or ethnic markets.) They’re sweeter and ferment better than others I’ve tried. Look for either the green shell or a white “husk” if the outer shell has been removed.
  • Harvest two or more cups of coconut water from the coconuts.
  • Warm the coconut water to around 90 degrees in a pan, not a microwave.
  • Pour the coconut water into a glass container with a lid.
  • Mix in one package of kefir starter (found at health food stores).
  • Let the coconut water sit in a warm and stable environment (around 70 degrees) and in 36 hours you have sweet, bubbly coconut kefir!

Enjoy the coconut “champagne” kefir mixed with lemon, lime, or unsweetened cranberry or black currant juice for a cocktail that will have your tummy blissfully happy and back on track for perfect health! If you need a little more sweetness, add a drop of Stevia.

Other things can cause your body to be in an acidic state including: too many animal products, stress, exercise without proper breathing, overeating, mineral deficiencies, constipation, drug use, and even negative thoughts.

Woman Biting Lemon SliceDo you happen to be one of the naysayers that think that thoughts have no power? Try this! Think of a plump, yellow, juicy lemon. Now imagine taking a big sour bite of it. Notice what’s happening inside of your mouth right now. Are you salivating a little more just at the thought of biting into that sour lemon? Did you actually eat the lemon in order for that response to occur? Nope. NOW you see how powerful your thoughts around food are, or anything else for that matter, and how they can actually control the physical reactions in your body. Now THAT is literally food for thought. Mind bending, isn’t it?

Quantum physicists have proven that a particle can blink into existence with the mere observance of it. How’s that for a paradigm shift in your reality? Play with me for a moment as I expand further. What if what you are focusing on in the outer world (disease, famine, war, and political unrest) were simply a reflection of what’s going on in your inner world? What if all of these versions of chaos going on inside of you simply needed healing? Would your focus on the outer world change if you were no longer dealing with these internal struggles? Maybe, just maybe, if we all made the time and gave the effort to our bodies that are craving to be re-balanced and loved, our outer world would begin to reflect that love too. Bring the focus back to you and heal and then let’s observe what happens.
